Just thought I'd give you all a blast from the East. I'll be getting married in June. Her name is Takae Masukawa. I havn't worked out all of the details yet, but I may be going through a name change. Her father has offered to add me to their family registry--the Japanese system is nothing like the American system. It functions basically as a birth certificate. It may mean that I'll have to adopt a new Japanese name. Can you imagine that? This process will make it easier for me to acquire Japanese citizenship. It's something I'll need as I plan to start my own English school here. Got a lot of hard times ahead... but as the Japanese say "gamansuru"! I went on a diving excursion to Palau and prepared my proposal for Takae there. When I got back to Japan, I proposed to her and she accepted! *WHEW* Minutes later, she informed me that I am going to be a daddy! Imagine that! The long-haired hippie being a daddy. My life from now on out will be quite an adventure. Sorry to tell you Rica.. but my kid will make it here before yours. :P The little one is due on my birthday in October! I'll try to teach it English so you all can talk with it. Until then...... take care folks! A

Hello from Japan folks! After 48 hours of labor and loss of sleep on both our parts, Takae and I are parents! Our daughter was born on October 5th, 2003 at 5:58am (Japan time). She is 51cm long and weighs 3300 grams (a little over 7 pounds). Takae had a completely natural birth with no drugs or help. Takae told me that I was in charge of naming her, so after months of thought and research I've come up with this name: Moe Bianca Sandlin (Mo-eh Bee-an-ka). In Japan, people use kanji for their names (pictographs). I decided that I liked the way Moe sounded, so the first kanji I chose meant "burn". Everyone resisted saying that it was too strong, even for a boy. So we founda a rare reading that means "crimson" (Mo). The second kanji was easy, I took it from her mother's name... it means picture (eh). Takae insisted on 3 names (In japan people only have 2, given and family). Knowing that red is a lucky color in Japan, I searched for another color; white. I decided that an Italian name would be nice when I found Bianca. In Japan, white is a symbol of purity (like most other places). Viola! Moe Bianca! I'll send some pics of us so you can see them and post them if you like.
